From the Desk of the Pastoral Care Provider

June 2007

Dear Friends,

I’m pleased to have been given the opportunity to serve as the Presbytery’s Pastoral Care Provider for the next year. Why did I feel called to apply? I have just completed my Doctor of Ministry in Pastoral Care through New York Theological Seminary where my project was focused on the self-differentiation and wholeness of clergy. Therein, I conclude that clergy who have outlets for work related stress fare better than those clergy men and women who operate as lone rangers and are consumed by their work. Such outlets, I suggest, would include peer support groups, or one-on-one support by someone with whom that clergy man or woman felt safe. While the project was undertaken and written to make a difference for men and women preparing for ministry, I also conclude that my work would have been in vain if judicatories within which clergy serve did not also take seriously the results and conclusions of my study.

Did you know about the Presbytery Pastoral Care Network? I have attached their last two newsletters, but you can also access their website for further information at www.pastoralcarenetwork.org.

Our Presbytery is taking seriously the issue of clergy care. You can reach me at my office number – 908-852-6515 or by e-mail at bamrev@aol.com.

Peace,

Barb
